Restrictions for file names on Windows
Posted by Sven Koester on 22 August 2007 12:58
When running under Windows, PresSTORE is bound by filename restrictions of the Windows operating system.
PresSTORE uses the Win32 subsystem and is thus bound to the following restrictions regarding file names:

Due to Windows restrictions, a file or directory name must not contain the following characters: / \ ? * : < > |
File names containing such characters are translated by Windows, even if mostly handled correctly by PresSTORE.

Due to restrictions in the Win32 subsystem, the following further restrictions are given:
  • A file or directory name must not end with a blank or a period.
  • File names are case preserving. If two files with the same name exist in the same directory, e.g. one lowercase and one uppercase, only one of these files can be accessed by PresSTORE.
Note that none of these restrictions affect the NTFS file system. These files may exist on the filesystem but cannot be accessed. The effects that may occur are not absolutely consistent. E.g. in case there is a file with a trailing blank, the Windows Explorer can display the file, but cannot open or rename it.
PresSTORE translates trailing blanks to underscores and trailing dots to slashes.
