Data Retention Time Q + A
Posted by Sven Koester on 06 June 2012 17:37

Question:

If I change the retention period on a full backup will it update the volumes accordingly ?

Answer:

The expiration date of a tape volume is changed only when a run of a backup plan uses this tape. Furthermore, it will not be reset to a date that is earlier than it is already set to. It can only be set further in the future. If you want the volume to expire earlier, you will have to manually recycle it or manually set it to be recycled the next time space is required.

Question:

The retention time of the data is over, but the tape is not set automatically to recycleable. Why?

Answer:

The data retain time is set in the GUI per backup plan. In case multiple plan with different retention times set write to the same tape, the one with the latest calculated recycle time wins.

Another reason may be that the Backup Plan is doing incremental backups only. In that case PresSTORE switches to a Progressive Backup mode and attempts to save the data again on another tape before the old one is set to Recycleable.

And a last reason may be that the volume is still in mode appendable, not closed or full. In that case, the tape is still writeable, so no need to recycle it.
