Data compression (Drive configuration)
Posted by Andre Kuehnemund on 21 September 2011 10:26

Q: How does data compression work? I see a setting under Drive configuration -> Additional Options.

A: Presstore uses hardware compression - in case of a physical drive. Otherwise, the zip compression techniques are used for the disk storage. The hardware compression has no impact whatsoever on speed, both save and restore. The only "negative" effect there is, is that it is not possible to predict how much data fits on a tape. However, this effect is present both with or without compression, since the tape has bad blocks which get skipped by automatically.
