Volumes not being recycled

Q: Customer wanted to perform a full backup during the weekend and incremental backups during the week. Recycle policy was set to 6 days. Volumes had expired but were not being recycled automatically. Why?

A: The problem was that the customer had created two backup plans - one containing a scheduled event for the weekly full backup, and a second separate backup plan containing a scheduled event for the incremental backups during the week. By doing so, the customer had, in essence, created two separate backup cycles. The first one being the one with the full backups. The second one being a progressive backup cycle. As a result, the incremental backups were not connected to the full backups - which made this a progressive backup. By its nature, Presstore cannot recycle a progressive backup volume until the data has first been resaved to a different volume or the data has been deleted from the server. Since neither one of those things had happened, Presstore refused to recycle the volume as this would have destroyed the only backup of those files.

The correct setup would have been to create a single backup plan that contains two scheduled events: one for the full backup and a second one for the incremental backups. This way Presstore would know that the full and incremental backups belong together. Presstore would then be able to handle volume expiration as expected.

Given the above scenario, setting Media Usage (under Expert Options) to 'New Media' would only apply to full backups, i.e. Presstore would request a new volume only for a full backup and would append  the data from the incremental backups.
