Presstore requesting additional tape(s) during restore job. Why?
Posted by Andre Kuehnemund on 15 March 2011 16:42

Question: Customer needs to restore a number of files, selects those files and is being told which volumes will be needed. Required volumes are being inserted into the jukebox and the restore job is being started. Some time into the restore job, Presstore requests yet another tape. What's going on?

Answer: This can happen when a file spans more than one volume. Presstore keeps track of which volume the beginning of a file is located on. It does not know where this file ends. In case a file is going to span across more than a single volume, Presstore would have written part of that file onto the first tape. Once it reached the end of the tape, it would have added the ID of the follower volume to this tape, closed that volume, moved on to the follower volume and continued to write that file.

Since Presstore does not know that the file in questions ended up spanning across more than one volume, it cannot request that follower tape at the outset of the restore job and has to ask for it later.

Is it normal for media to be spanned onto multiple tapes? Is this done for safety precautions?

At the time the file in question was written to tape, it did not fit on a single tape. Hence, P5 was forced to write the remainder of the file to a different tape. I would say that's normal behavior. I'm not sure what you meant by "Is this done for safety precautions?".
I recommend opening a support ticket should you have additional questions regarding this issue.
