ERROR - open sd: permission denied on Windows
Posted by Sven Koester on 13 May 2009 13:16
This Article describes what to do when connection a tape drive or jukebox to a windows host and the following error message appears during configuration:
ERROR - open sd: permission denied (POSIX EACCES {permission denied})

This error indicates that PresSTORE is not able to obtain a handle on the device to control it. This may be due to the fact that the device is not recognized by the operating system or that it is in control of another program, for example the Windows own Removable Storage Manager (RSM).
To overcome that, please take the following steps:

  • Open the Computer Management Console (Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management)
  • Browse the Storage > Removable Storage > Libraries section and disable all the Changers and Tape Drives there.
  • Re-power your changer.
  • Restart your Windows.
  • Reconfigure the changer in PresSTORE.
  • Check if now you can run the desired operations.
These steps disable the RSM from using the devices. The caveat here is that Windows may try to trick you out the next time you restart it by creating an entirely new set of devices.

If these steps do not lead to success or if Windows keeps interfering, PresSTORE can use an alternative OS API level to control the devices. In that case please do the following:

Open the Computer Management Console (Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management)
  • Browse the Storage > Removable Storage > Device Manager section and disable all the Changers and Tape Drives there.
  • Re-power your changer.
  • Restart your Windows.
  • Reconfigure the changer in PresSTORE.
  • Check if now you can run the desired operations.
